The first Venice pier was never opened. On March 12, 1905, as the City of Venice was about to announce its creation, a raging coastal storm wiped out the pier, pavilion and new six-hundred-seat auditorium, leaving timber and piling strewn for miles along the beach. A recreated pier offered “games of chance” and rides to packed crowds for over 15 years before its total destruction by fire in 1920 (see photograph). Nothing again quite matched to “Race Through The Clouds”, the pier’s rickety, wooden roller coaster with a final steep plunge off the end.

There have been other Venice piers. The “new” pier visible from Pier Suite is barren as compared to the constant nightlife of the earlier fun zones. At one time, thousands of tourists jammed four Venice piers, each with competing rides, shills and shops.

As The Venice Beach House in Southern California was being completed in 1912, Warren Wilson’s Daily Journal wrote of “More West Beach Piers”, two new ones proposed and one remodeled. He saw six or seven Venice piers in his lifetime as pier life dominated the attractions of the city.
